“My father never said he loved me.” Novel debut of the author nominated for the Nike Literary Award for his reportage Foucault in Warsaw. A poignant tale of shame and fear. Mother, daughter and son run away from home. With an ax in hand, their father follows them. “I will kill!” He screams in a hateful voice. An adult son, years later, finds documents in the archive that reveal a painful secret. What will happen in the confrontation of domestic truth and facts? What is the value of the stigma that becomes destiny and at the same time a way of life? Remigiusz Ryziński looks at the collision of paternal brutality with boyish sensitivity. He speaks of his mother with tenderness and of his sister with admiration — the “woman's house” is his refuge. To be loved by a father is a painful need. “The Apprentice” is a moving picture of loneliness in the midst of a hostile world. The author reveals the mechanisms of action of prejudice and exclusion. It precisely exposes family and national traumas. Transforms personal history into universal studies
