On October 16 at 17:00 we invite you to a meeting on the 20th edition of the MEMORIAL TREE campaign.
This year — on Saturday 17 October (Saturday) at 12:00 — three more will be planted in the Central Cemetery. They will be commemorated:
Stanisław Badoń (1926—1997) — librarian, historian, in 1955—1974 director of the Provincial and Municipal Public Library in Szczecin.
Antonina Saturnina Lucyna Sienicka (1898—1979) — researcher in the field of botany, associated with the Agricultural Academy in Szczecin.
Ireneusz Krzysztof Szmidt (1935—2021) — poet, animator of the student movement in Szczecin, actor, director, songwriter, reviewer and literary and theater critic.
The initiator of the action Andrzej Łazowski, Ryszard Markow, PhD Tomasz Śleński will take part in the conversation dedicated to them.
TREES OF MEMORY, an initiative of the association Time Space Identity, aims to preserve in Szczecin the memory of People important to the city who do not have graves here — the first manifestations of memory. That is why we plant trees in order to protect and nurture the memory of them, the permanence of their merits for us and our successors, for the city.
Planting oaks of different varieties, long-lived trees, as a commemoration of their achievements, harmonizes with the character of the Szczecin cemetery — garden, enriching its priceless robe with plants.
There are already 48 MEMORIAL TREES in the Central Cemetery. Each of them is someone's life, and all of them, combining with thousands of graves, co-create with them a symbolic summary of the fate of Poland in the 20th and 21st centuries — from the time of partition, the First World War, the regaining of independence, the construction of the Second Polish Republic, the memory of the Borderlands and the inhabitants of all its lands, through the drama of September 1939, occupation, deportation and exile, from the Holocaust and the Holocaust, resistance and struggle, repatriation, displacement and settlement, to reconstruction and construction, emigration, the feeling of lack of freedom, the stubbornness of daily action, opposition, the hope that John Paul II gave, the explosion of “Solidarity” and the co-creation of a free homeland.
Each of these resumes is important for Szczecin. Each of the People commemorated with the Tree should live in our memory, in our hearts, in the daily co-creation of tomorrow.
