Tomasz Pietrasiewicz's publication is a story about places, people and events related to the history of Lublin printing industry. As the author writes, “the history of the printed word reflects an important part of the history of Lublin and its culture. Unfortunately, places that for hundreds of years are quickly disappearing from the space of the city, which have been a testament to the fact that we belong to the civilization of printing. The printed word connected us with Europe in a special way. At a time when every trip, even a short one, was an expedition, the book was a real window into the world.
The author leads readers through the city along the route starting at the Market Square, then follows Królewska Street to Krakowskie Przedmieście to reach Kościuszki Street through Litewski Square and Niecała Street. Along the way, he talks about printing houses, bookstores and libraries, presenting biographies of printers, bibliophiles, booksellers and editors, and discusses the most important publications in Lublin.
Tomasz Pietrasiewicz — creator and director of the Center “Grodzka Gate — NN Theatre” in Lublin, associated with the Grupa Chwilowa theatre and director of the NN Theatre, author of performative activities in the city spaces, cultural animator, opposition activist during the PRL period, author of books. Winner of many awards and distinctions.
Graduated from the Faculty of Physics at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (1980). Founder and then director of the Center “Grodzka Gate — NN Theater”. Director of performances of the NN Theatre, as well as Mysteries of Memory, among others: “One Earth — Two Temples” (2000), “Day of Five Prayers” (2000), “Mystery of the Bell (2026) taking place in the spaces of Lublin. Creator of exhibitions in the space of the Grodzka Gate and the exhibition “Elementarz” (2003) located in one of the barracks of the former concentration camp in Majdanek. Author of, among others, a three-volume book monograph Czechowicz. In Search of a Hidden City (2006-2008) and publications including: Circles of Remembrance (2008), A Guide to the History of the Printed Word in Lublin (2014), NN Theatre Memorial Theatre. Lublin 1997-2017 (2017), Mysterious Lublin. Imaginarium (2022, 2023), Józef Czechowicz — in the footsteps of the poet. Lublin (2024), Metaphysical tourism of Władysław Panas. Lublin (2025), and guides from the NN Theatre Guides series, including: “Poemat o mesto Lublin” by Józef Czechowicz (2018), Żmigród i okolice. Guide (2020). Initiator and originator of the magazine “PA.RA”.
