How can the environment record violence, participate in its production, and at the same time provide clues to reconstruct it? The starting point for the conversation will be Karolina Grzywnowicz's exhibition Desensitization and the Border Forensics investigation The Death Zone. Combining artistic practice with critical investigative methods, we will look at how smell, temperature, forest, water and wetlands are incorporated into the functioning of the border regime, but also how traces left in bodies and the environment can become material of testimony and evidence. The conversation will be an attempt to answer the question of what happens when the environment ceases to be treated as a neutral background to violence and becomes part of its reconstruction.
