Carl Frölich shoots “Refuge” in Berlin On Location in the style of Realism. He portrays the lives of normal and simple people who are rarely portrayed in films otherwise. We see the workers' quarters, their kitchens, market halls, third-class hospitals and see the construction of subway line 6 through Tempelhofer Feld.
In a quasi-documentary way, “Refuge” shows life in Berlin at the end of the 1920s away from show bizz and at the same time tells a very moving story. Because of his involvement in the 1918/19 revolution, Martin (Franz Lederer) flees Germany and only returns to Berlin after eight years: tired, lonely, penniless and exhausted. He finds refuge with market saleswoman Hanne (Henny Porten).
This silent film concert by Stephan von Bothmer is part of our series of Berlin films at the Distel Theater and part of the 24th Silent Film Concert Festival 2027.
