The greatest piano poets in one program! The echo of one of Chopin's impromptus will emerge from George Crumb's miniature like a memory of “fading elegance”. But does the Polonaise in F minor with its frantic flight and persistent repetitions have anything to do with elegance? Rather with a rush of heart. The two legends of the two Saint Franciscans — the patrons of the great Ferenc Liszt — do not have much of the pious oil prints in them. Through piano mastery and freedom of form, they lead towards contemplation, religious or artistic.
Moments of sublimity and pathos can wither or tire. Sonata in A major D 959 by Franz Schubert is one of those works that restores the measure of things. Its second part Andantino is a borderline experience. A look into the abyss. Schubert, however, would not have been himself if he had not let light into it. From heart to heart.
