Can the four seasons sound in two completely different ways? The concert Vivaldi vs. Piazzolla — Eight Seasons is a fascinating meeting of two musical visionaries who are more than two centuries apart, but who share an extraordinary ability to paint the world with sounds. The first part of the musical story is Antonio Vivaldi's famous series Four Seasons — a masterpiece of the Baroque and one of the earliest examples of programmatic music. Each of the four violin concertos represents another time of the year, showing its beauty and variability. The singing of birds, murmuring streams, summer storms, autumn dances, winter frost and crackling ice were recorded in the score with extraordinary imagination, making Vivaldi's work a timeless symbol of musical illustration.

The second protagonist of the evening is Astor Piazzolla, creator of tango nuevo, who in the cycle Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas takes listeners to Buenos Aires. His Seasons are not the equivalent of Vivaldi's work, but a personal reflection on the rhythm of life in a big city. Instead of pastoral landscapes, pulsating streets, melancholy, passion and energy of Argentine tango appear. It is a music full of contrasts — at the same time lyrical and full of temperament, improvisational and at the same time extremely sophisticated. The juxtaposition of the two cycles reveals how different the two eminent composers perceived nature, time and emotions. Baroque clarity and elegance meet the South American element, creating a musical dialogue between the Venice of the 18th century and Buenos Aires of the 20th century.
