“STRYENIAN. Let's dance, Sophia!” is a monodrama performed by Dorota Landowska, in which Zofia Stryjeńska talks about her life. The show was created by a team of international artists and is a theatrical, documentary, film and musical journey.
The photos were shot in places that Stryienska was associated with — in Munich, Paris and Geneva. The story of Zofia Stryjeńska is a story about how a young girl disguises herself as a man and undertakes her dream painting studies in Munich at a time when women were not yet allowed to study. It is a story about her love for her husband, Karol Stryjeński, about the dream of building a family nest, but also about the simultaneous need for solitude in which she would be fulfilled as a painter. Sofia, fighting for love for man and love for art, falls into a kind of madness, madness, because of which her husband twice and “for her sake” places her in a psychiatric hospital. But maybe this is his way of freedom from the crazy love for which Zofia runs after Charles around Zakopane and even chases him with a revolver around Paris? But how do you reconcile all these loves in one life? Their children Zofia gives up to Żańca the ugly, that is, her sister-in-law. He also works like crazy: he doesn't eat, he doesn't wash. He exhibits paintings in Poland and around the world, makes illustrations for books — for Kochanowski's “Trains”, Szymonowicz's “Sielanki”, Krasicki's “Monachomachia”, poems by Przerwy-Tetmajer, creates scenographies and costume designs for Szymanowski's ballet “Harnasie”, paints polychromes, creates interiors of ships “Piłsudski” and “Batory”. The good times, however, pass quickly. Zofia wanders around hotels and rented studios, lives like a cloister, borrows money, pawn paintings and wardrobe, chronically poor. He dreams of going to the USA. He even buys tickets for the ship. Batory was supposed to set sail on September 18, meanwhile... war breaks out. Zofia sticks to Poland, even though she has a Swiss passport. He tries to leave only when the Russians enter Krakow. Stryjeńska, an outstanding representative of art deco, died in Geneva in 1976 in the Bell Air psychiatric hospital.
