Being close to people and especially looking where they are doing poorly — that's what journalist and author Sophia Maier does. She made known for her reports from European refugee camps, and later she reported on crisis and war zones for print media and television. She was in Syria, which was still controlled by Assad, with the children of Aleppo, after the Taliban seized power again in Afghanistan, and she portrayed women in the war in Ukraine. As an investigative journalist, Sophia Maier researched right-wing extremism and fraud involving alternative cancer therapies. In her book “Heart of Barbed Wire,” the award-winning reporter talks about the lost humanity on Europe's external borders and accuses the West of “double standards.”
