Maja Kleczewska, director of the famous Grandfathers and Weddings, brings to the stage the prose of one of the most outstanding Polish reporters and writers of the 20th and 21st centuries — Hanna Krall. The premiere of the play took place on 25 October on the Main Stage of the Powszechny Theatre and was also the first premiere, under the direction of Mai Kleczewska.
The play bears the title of Hanna Krall's most personal book — Sublocator, in which the writer reveals the fate of a girl she “knew quite well”, but we will also find traces of many other texts that made up the monumental work Phantom of Pain — a story about Doom and Memory, published in 2017 by Wydawnictwo Literackie. Including, among others, Hanna Krall's most famous book, Time Before the Lord God.
“The central figure in Sublocator's play is someone who is never sure that he will survive. A subtenant cannot appeal to any law, to any moral rule, to any human alliance that would give her the promise of survival. Any alliance may turn out to be temporary, and the “contract for life” — we read in the description of the performance.
There will always be those who, as Hanna Krall says, will try to save the girl and those who will not hesitate to take her to the police station, thereby determining her fate.
“I have the feeling that we are still exhibiting too few works by Hanna Krall in Poland. Many people read her primarily as a reporter, and meanwhile she is a large-format writer whose texts can be read many times and you can never say that you have already read them, because each time completely new meanings and contexts appear. - says Maja Kleczewska. - Hanna Krall's language is quite hermetic and is not obviously intended for theater, but this It is more of a challenge, requiring the invention of a new theatrical language.
The author of the adaptation and playwright Sublocatorka is Grzegorz Niziołek, who collaborated with Maja Kleczewska, among others, on the famous Wedding staged at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow and Tkoczie, which premiered in February this year at the Silesian Theatre in Katowice.
“Today we know that Hanna Krall's lyrics are not a collection of reports, stories, conversations. Stories diverge and descend, abruptly break off and find further continuation in the fates of other characters. As with Kafka or Borges, we are dealing with a rhizome, a labyrinth, a garden with forking paths. — says Grzegorz Niziołek. — In this labyrinth we always come across at some point their author, tireless in asking questions to which there is no answer, but also ready to ask no more questions, but only Listen to the stories of others.
Fabien Lédé prepares the scenography for Sublocatorka, costumes by Konrad Parol, music by Cezary Duchnowski, lights and projections by Kacper Fertacz and choreography by Kaya Kołodziejczyk.
