Superfan

Noisy folk, soaring cello and fragile love songs with Superfan in VEGA

Superfan is the songwriting alliance for Kali Priya Flanagan, a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and producer. The project was originally conceived as a solo venture, but ambitious string arrangements created in collaboration with cellist Omeed Almassi have since become a defining characteristic of Superfan's noisy and magnetic pop universe.

Having just signed a contract with London-based record label AD 93 (home to Joanne Robertson, YHWH Nailgun and Dagmar Zuniga among others), the three most recent singles -- “Miss W Jones,” “Apeiron (Fantasy Football)” and “Picture Of Return” -- mark the birth of what Kali calls “Acousticello.”

With a newfound reassurance and an artistic outlook without limitations, Flanagan has abandoned the literal in favour of a fragmented and impressionistic lyric. Love's torn ballads are conveyed through blurred imagery and literary sensibility, which testify to a deeper confidence in both his lyrics and voice.

Flanagan cites albums such as Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1996, The Sea and Cake's Parasol, Cat Power's The Greatest, Lows Trust, and Sigur Rós' Hvarf/Heim among his main sources of inspiration. In addition, vocalists such as Elizabeth Fraser, Beth Gibbons, Rufus Wainwright and Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays.

His distinctive guitar sound, dark vocals and talent for impactful live arrangements have led to collaborations in songwriting and production, as well as cover versions and guest appearances for artists such as Operelly, Jordan Patterson and Quiet Light.

In addition to playing support for The Strokes at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Superfan has shared the stage with Quiet Light, Knifeplay, Kath Bloom, Horsegirl, Userband, Samba Jean-Baptiste and countless other leading names.

Look forward to an evening when downbeat guitar timbre, cello and vocals merge into an intense and enveloping musical space when Superfan occupies the Ideal Bar on October 28.
