The first Saturday of the festival awaits us with a sound feast combining various musical territories: American tradition, Western and Central Europe, Pakistan, the Balkans and Iraq. Sutarinova and Shahzad Ismaily on one stage is one of those unobvious connections that you think about after the concert: why hasn't anyone come up with this before? The second part of this evening will be filled with the work of the quartet of Amir ElSaffar.

About the event

The first Saturday of the festival awaits us with a sound feast combining various musical territories: American tradition, Western and Central Europe, Pakistan, the Balkans and Iraq. Sutarinova and Shahzad Ismaily on one stage is one of those unobvious connections that you think about after the concert: why hasn't anyone come up with this before? The second part of this evening will be filled with the work of the quartet of Amir ElSaffar.

Recently, the Sutari trio has evolved into the shape of Sutarinov, as part of which Filip Zakrzewski, responsible for electronics and effects, joined the project. White voices and traditional instruments are now accompanied by electronic sounds, and the form becomes more open and improvised. In NFM's premiere project, the band will join forces with Shahzad Ismaily, who appeared on the New York scene at the beginning of the 21st century as an accomplished musician — an outstanding drummer, double bass player, producer and expert in the spiritual aspect of his own art. Interested in free jazz, rock and world music in equal measure, he quickly became one of the most sought-after and most intensely touring figures.

After the break, the quartet of Amir ElSaffar will perform. This artist played microtone music for many years before the world went crazy for Angine de Poitrine. A microtone piano will be on stage and Tania Giannouli will be seated next to it. On the saxophone we will hear Ole Mathisen, who is also developing his interest in microtones, and the versatile Tomas Fujiwara will play drums. ElSaffar recorded the legendary album Post-Chromodal Out! with Hafez Modirzadeh in 2012. The current music of the quartet of one of the most creative trumpeters in contemporary jazz, to some extent, grows out of that concept.

All fans of jazz and improvised music, as well as those who are just starting their adventure with them, are encouraged to purchase a pass for the upcoming 23rd edition of Jazztopad Festival!
