Sweeney Todd

Barrie Kosky stages Sondheim's musical classic as a “children's theatre nightmare collage” with a lust for horror that irises between disgust and laughter. Without pardon, he explores the question of what a person is capable of when he follows the logic of revenge to the bitter end.

The barber Benjamin Barker is sentenced completely unfairly to a long prison term by Judge Turpin, who is after Barker's wife. Years later, Barker returns with only one thing on his mind: Revenge! His wife killed herself, reports the burnt out, albeit enterprising pâté baker Mrs. Lovett. And so Benjamin Barker alias Sweeney Todd not only launches a gruesome vendetta, but also a flourishing joint venture in the meat pie sector with his informant.
