Swell Mazzoll Duo (USA/Poland — premiere)
Another opportunity to listen to Jerzy Mazzolla during the autumn Jazz Festival Jantar will be the duo initiated by us. Jerzy Mazzolla will be joined by Steve Swell during an intimate, intimate concert at Żak Gallery. It will be a rare opportunity to listen to a duet for clarinet and trombone, and in addition in a completely acoustic edition.
Brombergerstrasse Trio (Poland — premiere)
Jerzy Mazzoll ate bread from more than one stove and although he has played with such diverse artists and bands as Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Fred Frith, Roscoe Mitchell, Django Bates, Tomasz Stańko, Sylvie Curvosieur, Kazik Staszewski, Hens, Love or the GDR, he is still looking for and creating new lineups. During the autumn edition of Jazz Jantaru, you will be able to hear the newest one — the Brombergerstrasse Trio. In addition to the leading clarinetist of yassu, it is composed of pianist Szymon Burnos, who during the March edition of the Festival performed the premiere of his own project — Allah Bonsai, and drummer Liliana Zieniawa, associated with the Cracow improvisation scene.
Swell Tokar Kugel Trzaska (USA/Ukraine/Germany Poland/ — Polish premiere)
We planned that Joe McPhee would play during this concert for the festival audience. Unfortunately, Joe McPhee has been struggling with health problems lately and although many until recently indicated that he would be able to fly to Gdansk, in the end the doctor advised him to cancel all scheduled concerts, including during our Festival. We found the best possible replacement, because Steve Swell, Mark Tokar and Klaus Kugl will be joined by a longtime collaborator of both Joe and the rest of the team, and at the same time a character perfectly known to our audience - Mikołaj Trzaska. The Gdansk and American saxophonist recorded together the albums “Intimate Conversations”, “Magic” and “Lark Uprising”, and shared the stage in countless projects. Their friendship has lasted for twenty years, during which they were united by a rare bond of spiritual and artistic understanding.
Steve Swell (collaborator of Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton and William Parker, among others) will play the trombone, Klaus Kugel described by Polish Radio as the “gray eminence of free jazz” on drums, and on the double bass the steadfast Mark Tokar, who in recent years has had to share the role of musician with that of an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In 2026, the quartet will release the album “Spontaneous Convergence”, and its Polish premiere will take place during Jazz Jantaru.
