We invite hearers interested in comics, art, deaf culture and storytelling through images to an exceptional creative workshop in Szczecin, led by Wojtek Biernawski.

About the event

Comic and zine workshops for hearing people

Can a comic book tell you about the world of the Deaf? How to show the culture, sign language, experiences and stories of Deaf people with an image?

We invite hearers interested in comics, art, deaf culture and storytelling through images to an exceptional creative workshop in Szczecin, led by Wojtek Biernawski.

During the course you will learn the basics of creating comics and zine, and at the same time you will have the opportunity to take a closer look at the world of the Deaf and its culture - not through theory, but through joint action, conversation and creative process.

What are we gonna do?

During the workshop we will:

come up with your own stories and themes,
create comic scripts,
to build a narrative with an image,
design comic boards,
experiment with dialogue and text,
create collages and author's compositions,
to learn about zine as an independent form of artistic publication,
work on your own comic book or zine inspired by the theme of the world of the Deaf.

It's not about creating a “disability comic.” It is about showing the experience of how a hearing person can feel towards the G/Deaf community, in a world of silence, which means no sound for them.

Meeting of two worlds

The workshop will be an opportunity to meet Deaf and hearing people through art.

Comics and zines become a space for the exchange of experiences — they allow us to talk about differences, stereotypes, communication, language, culture and everyday life, but also about what can unite us.

The project aims to acquaint listeners with the little-known history of the Deaf community and its culture, art and specificity of the visual-spatial language of PJM.

Your work can be shown to the public!

The result of the workshops will be original comics and zines.

The resulting works will be presented during the exhibition on December 14 at the Municipal Cultural Center Klub Delta in Szczecin organized as an accompanying event of the Beton Festival. West Pomeranian Comic Encounters.

Selected works will also become part of a collective zine publication.

All art materials are provided by the organizers - paper, markers, paints, brushes, glues and other materials needed for work.

We do not require comic book making experience or artistic ability.

All you need is curiosity, openness and the desire to create your own story.

If you are interested in comics, art, deaf culture or just want to try a completely different way of telling stories — we invite you to participate!

Organizers: Embodiment Foundation, Raksha Foundation, City Cultural Center in Szczecin.

Co-financed from the MKiDN program “Accessible Culture.”
