About the event

Lecture entitled “Solitude and community. Find Yourself, Meet the Other” Host: Aleksandra Golecka, Małgorzata Łukomska-Jamrozik

Place: Silesian Library Educational House, ul. Francuska 12, Katowice Free admission!

The Literary Institute, founded by the recluse Jerzy Giedroyc and his collaborators, served the community. Sometimes the solitude of some is a prerequisite for the existence or development of a community. Let's observe how this feedback works, after all, also present in our lives.

A specialist in loneliness, Thomas Merton, an American trappist and poet, corresponded with Czesław Miłosz, associated with “Culture”. What does the monk have to say to us today? Maybe it's worth listening to in times of ubiquitous noise.

Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han will talk about society and the disappearance of the community. His newly published book, The Spirit of Hope and Other Essays, brilliantly explains what threatens the community today and how to reclaim the eponymous, difficult, hope we need like bread.

We will also mention the often “invisible” community builders, women, led by Zofia Hertz, co-founder of the Literary Institute.

Aleksandra Golecka (coordinator of the cycle) — teacher of philosophy, deputy president of the Polish Society of Philosophical Counseling. During the school of psychotherapy in the current of existential analysis and logotherapy. He writes texts for the Contemporary Art Gallery Esta. Lover of a living philosophy based on dialogical philosophizing and existential agitation. To be found on the garden_existencja profile and social media.

Małgorzata Łukomska-Jamrozik — Polish scholar, Englishman, philosopher, teacher, lecturer at the Pszczyna University of the Third Age; mindfulness coach and therapist. She completed a course in creative writing. Member of the Polish Society of Philosophical Counseling. Reader, vegetarian, peripatetic.

Within the framework of the project “Fields of vision of the book — between the letter and the light”, a series of three philosophical meetings will be held, combined with discussion panels for the local community (young adults). Each meeting will consist of an introductory lecture, during which the lecturers will discuss philosophical topics in reference to literature, and an open discussion panel moderated by the lecturer. The aim of the series is to create a creative space for conversations and dialogue, also intergenerational, combining the popularization of knowledge about literature, “living” philosophy and creative practices.

The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund — a state special purpose fund. As part of the Partnership for the Book 2026 program.
