Worlds After Disaster — Post-Apocalypse in Video Games | Horror Day 2026

From the rusty wastelands of Fallout, to the desolate, mushroom-covered city ruins in The Last of Us, to the virus-ridden “T” and “G” laboratories and streets of Resident Evil Raccoon City, the post-apocalypse is one of the most eagerly explored themes in video games. Why are we so eager to return to doomed worlds? During the lecture, we will look at how video game developers project the collapse of civilization and what makes virtual wrecks resonate so strongly with gamers and gamers around the world. We will look at how classic survival horror (inventory management, lack of ammunition, finding green herbs) is giving way or mixing with open worlds and crafting, and ask about morality in a world without rights.

The lecture is aimed at fans of the genre as well as people interested in how video games use the theme of disaster to raise questions about the condition of modern man.
