About the event

We invite you to spend a special night with the theatrical hit, the award-winning musical “1989".

During an evening full of music, emotions and energy, a lamp with the actors was scheduled on stage. Let's welcome the New Year together!

“1989” is a pioneering performance at every level, an experiment with an extremely high degree of risk — just like the Polish transformation. It turned out to be a captivating and moving work, masterfully combining layers of meanings, brilliantly played, sung and danced. Aneta Kyzioł, Politics

The musical “1989” is a great opportunity to remember Polish socio-political transformations, the overthrow of communism and the restoration of democracy in Poland. The most important figures from Polish contemporary history appear on the stage, including Lech Wałęsa, Anna Walentynowicz, Jacek and Gaja Kuroniów. The play, jointly realized by Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków and Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, was directed by Katarzyna Szyngiera.

1989 is a play directed by Katarzyna Szyngiera in a form referring to the American “Hamilton”. Lin-Manuel Miranda's revolutionary musical brought rap to Broadway, proposing a fresh language of storytelling appealing to audiences young and old alike. The sound of our musical is responsible for one of the best Polish rap producers — Andrzej Mikosz “Webber”, known for many years of cooperation with “Łona”.

1989 shows the collapse of communism from a new perspective. Events known from film chronicles and history textbooks come to life on stage as seen through the eyes of three fascinating couples. In the lives of the Frasyniukes, Waleses and Kuronians, ideas compete with love, enthusiasm collides with the weight of history, and heroism intertwines with family tragedies. Spectators accompany the protagonists in iconic moments — during strikes in the shipyard and at the Round Table — but also in intimate moments of joy and suffering experienced in the seclusion of Peerelo apartments or prison cells.
