On the 45th anniversary of the pacification of the “Wujek” mine, the Silesian Philharmonic invites you to a memorial concert dedicated to the victims of one of the most tragic events in the history of modern Silesia. Music will become a space for reflection on freedom, solidarity and responsibility for the memory of the people who, in December 1981, paid the highest price for their beliefs.
On December 13, 1981, martial law was introduced in Poland. Three days later, during the pacification of the mine “Uncle”, nine miners died from the bullets of ZOMO troops. This event became a symbol of resistance to the communist regime and was permanently inscribed in the history of the region and the whole country.
The concert program consists of works that tell in different ways about memory, identity and human destinies. A special place will be occupied by the music of Wojciech Kilar — a composer strongly associated with Silesia. Themes from the film Salt of the Black Earth, telling about the Silesian uprisings, music from The Pianist, Song of the Little Knight and the famous waltz from the film Nights and Days will remind the artist who was able to turn history, emotions and memory into a universal language of music.
The program will also include songs that have been permanently recorded in the collective memory of subsequent generations — music by Waldemar Kazanecki from the TV series Dom, Clint Mansell's poignant Requiem for a Dream, Leonard Cohen's timeless Hallelujah and the touching themes of Ennia Morricone from the film Mission. Each of these works tells of human experiences, hope, loss and the power of memory.
A special highlight of the program will be 9 — 23 Mikołaj Jarczyński — a piece awarded in the Composer Competition “II Symphony of Remembrance”, directly referring to the events related to the pacification of the “Wujek” mine and constituting a contemporary musical voice in memory of the tragedy of December 1981.
The evening will culminate with Adam Wesołowski's Industrial Symphony for orchestra and multimedia. Inspired by the industrial heritage of the region, the work creates an evocative portrait of Silesia — a place whose history was co-created by mines, smelters and generations of people associated with hard work. It is a musical story about the region, its memory and identity.
