About the event

The Freud Museum is delighted to host the launch of ‘Psychoanalysis Otherwise’, a collection edited by the FREEPSY Collective. This evening symposium is dedicated to the publication (6:00pm – 7:45pm), with the presence of editors Raluca Soreanu and Ana Minozzo, authors and guests. It is followed by launch of an exhibition by Ana Čvorović, curated by Sacha Craddock (8pm – 9pm), and a wine reception (9pm – 10pm). The symposium is available both in person and online.

The first part of the evening will be dedicated to the launch of Psychoanalysis Otherwise, a collection of papers by the Free Clinics Working Group (FCWG) at FREEPSY. The Free Clinics Working Group is a collective space of exchange, learning, thinking and writing promoted by FREEPSY.

Over the past four years, FREEPSY hosted guests from free clinics and scholars from various territories aiming at stretching our collective repertoire of what free psychoanalytic clinics are, can be and how they operate across different contexts.

Since 2022, the FCWG has been fostering the establishment of an intimate network of researchers & clinicians of psychosocial orientation that can discuss texts, think together and produce alternative types of scholarly work collectively such as zines, online dictionaries, artwork and essays. Psychoanalysis Otherwise is the fruit of these collective explorations.

On the evening, psychoanalysts Raluca Soreanu and Ana Minozzo will be in conversation with authors and guests, including Susana Caló, Joanna Ryan and Anderson Santos.

The date also marks the first day of the three-week Free Clinics Festival, organised by the FREEPSY Collective. Held between November 16 and December 6 in various locations across London, the Free Clinics Festival includes a series workshops, book launches, conferences, artist talks, exhibitions and more. Please check the FREEPSY website for more information on how to register for the events: https://freepsyproject.com/fcf/.

The second part of the evening will be dedicated to the opening of an exhibition by Ana Čvorović, artist-researcher at FREEPSY, curated by Sacha Craddock. Sound artist Matthew Faulkner will also participate. The exhibition will be displayed on site, at the Freud Museum, over the duration of the Free Clinics Festival.

The two launches will be followed by a reception.

Matthew Faulkner is designer of immersive, multichannel soundscapes, tailored for exhibition spaces and galleries in collaboration with visual artists, as well as for live performance venues and home listening. His sonic backdrops invoke extended realities, liminal and uncanny spaces, and moods that can be as soothing as they are unsettling, through the collage of found sound, musical textures and voice. His frequent work with artist Ana Čvorović is an ongoing collaboration and expression of discourse, psychology, existentialism and abstraction through sound and vision, and in an early show featuring Matthew’s soundscapes (Closeness, Refuse: Refuge: Re-fuse, The Koppel Project, London, 2016) he developed his idea of a simulated room tone; a sonic-backdrop that is non-invasive and hidden, but is evocative of another reality and impactful without making itself known. It is through his collaboration with Čvorović that he was invited to work with FREEPSY on the Hollós Project, developing the Multi-Tonal Reading composition in 2025. His soundscapes for The Stranger are realised through engagement with Čvorović’s sculptures and the Hollós Project, made using extracts from the contributors’ readings of Hollós as well as field recordings and synthesised textures. A suite of 3 pieces from this collection is currently on display as part of The Fragile Self (Semmelweis Museum, Budapest, Hungary) alongside various Hungarian psychiatric art collections, and the Multi-Tonal Reading composition. His soundscapes and ambient music are collected into his Akousmatter portfolio, which is available online.
