Is it possible to create a piece of furniture from a single piece of wood? In the 19th century, this seemed almost impossible, and yet the technology of bending wood changed the history of design. Michael Thonet's chairs made their way into cafes, apartments and palaces around the world, becoming icons of modernity long before the birth of the design we know today. During the meeting we will look at the secrets of bent furniture — its technology, aesthetics and extraordinary popularity. We will also consider why the wooden chair remains one of the best designed everyday objects to this day.
