His Scream has become a symbol of our modern anxieties. However, there is no painter in the world more famous and at the same time less known than Edvard Munch.
Today Oslo, ancient Kristiania, marks a turning point in the knowledge of this artist. The new MUNCH museum, opened in October 2021, is a spectacular skyscraper rising in the fjord of the Norwegian capital; designed to house the huge collection submitted by the artist to his city: 28,000 works, from paintings to graphics and drawings, as well as notebooks, sketchbooks, photographs and experimental videos. All together they give us a stunning insight into the mind, passions and art of the genius of the North.
Above all, however, the documentary focuses on his art, reflecting on a central theme that stands out in his diverse work: the unique notion of Time. Munch wrote: I do not paint what I see, but what I saw. He repeated his themes, painted and repainted the same paintings, preserving them in his atelier. Time in his understanding was a bridge connecting the dimensions of the universe, making it possible to establish contact with spirits and souls.
The film explores a powerful legacy to shed new light on Edvard Munch, a man of extraordinary and mysterious charm, a forerunner and a master. At the same time, it is Munch's journey through Norway, to places dear to him; it is a search for the roots and identity of a universal artist.
