What is “Tango” about? About society. About theater and artists. About freedom. About values. About power.
“Tango” is also a story about people who are behind the shape of the world — order, chaos, terror. Mrozek's family is one explosive family. The world on a micro scale, feelings on a macro scale. Someone pretends to be someone, hides something, someone cheats, someone else is deceived, everyone dreams of something, is ashamed of something, someone suffers. A text written nearly sixty years ago poses a question to which we are constantly looking for answers. Who are we when we take off our masks?
In “Tango,” two mirrors — art and reality — reflect worlds that look at each other. Are we witnessing a drama, or maybe a farce? Human, family, social, political? “Tango” is a song that can make you laugh, until... Arthur's conservative revolution versus Stomil's liberal views. The metaphor is too clear. And the imagination suggests that the finale of this story is the beginning of another story, the heroes of which can be ourselves.
2023 marked the 110th anniversary of the opening of the Polish Theatre and the 10th anniversary of the death of Sławomir Mrozhek. The premiere of “Tango” directed by Wawrzyńec Kostrzewski inaugurated a series of events dedicated to both these anniversaries.
