NO PLACES | “Zemsta”, next to “Bachelorette”, Alexander Fredra's most famous comedy, has been alive in the consciousness of many generations of Poles for almost 200 years.
Critics wrote that it was like a “polonaise played with the sound of words” and everyone agreed on one thing - this is Fredry's most Polish comedy.
The neighborhood dispute between Cześnik and Rejent becomes the basis for showing human vices, ridiculing pettiness, but also an opportunity to remind why in the end it is agreement that will rebuild what hatred has destroyed. As it happens in comedy, “Revenge” could not miss a love intrigue aimed at young lovers and the intrigues of the so-called middle generation, that is, the funny Papkin and the appetizing Podstolina.
A separate motive is the dispute over the castle, in which the action of the comedy takes place. He plays the role of the co-protagonist of the work, as a motif from the pre-romantic Gothic novel, in which the conflict over the castle becomes the spring that sets the characters in motion. The origin of this motif dates back to 1764, when the English writer Horace Walpole published “The Castle of Otranto”, a novel probably known to Fredra.
And it was from such noble poetic material that Fredro weaved “Revenge”, which is worth constantly reminding. Thanks to the unique, faithful to the letter of the text and respect for the word, the staging of the Polish Classics Theater, we can move to Kamieniec Castle to see for ourselves why we are so eager to build walls between us and what will happen when, in a world where agreement is supposedly impossible, holy peace reigns for a moment.
