I close my eyes to be with you
Under my eyelids I watch our movie
As if nothing had happened at all. NOTHING
I close my eyes and hear how
He taps his wings on the moth lamp...

— lyrics: Janusz Onufrowicz

A healthy adult person blinks an average of 15—20 times per minute. A single blink lasts only 0.1 to 0.4 seconds, and during the day the eyes remain closed for a total of up to several tens of minutes. The brain automatically compensates for these short pauses, so that we do not notice their effect on the perceived image.

In the play “I close my eyes and...” closing your eyes becomes more than a natural reaction of the body. It is a tool of expression that allows dancers to shift attention from the outside world to the inside of their own body. Immersing themselves in the music, they listen to its micro-rhythms, the bass that resonates in the body and the subtle changes of the melody. The movement becomes smooth, intuitive and authentic thanks to this.

Dancing can lead to the release of emotions stored in the body and the experience of a state of flow (flow). It ceases to be a mere reproduction of steps, but becomes a physical response to sound, word and emotions experienced. Closing your eyes also allows you to free yourself from judgment, self-criticism and shame. Feeling and experiencing come to the fore, not just dance technique and physical perfection.

The performance of the FLESZ Dance Theater shows the closing of the eyes in many dimensions, leaving the audience space for their own interpretations. Sometimes it is cutting yourself off from the outside world and immersing yourself in a flood of thoughts, memories, guilt or shame. Other times it is accompanied by moments of elation, deep emotion or crying. It can also be a reaction to pain, fear, or a difficult situation—an attempt to escape, hide, or look away from the problem.

Closed eyes also have a symbolic dimension. In art, they are associated with calm, rest, sleep, and sometimes also with death. In the performance, they become a starting point for reflection on emotions, memory, closeness and what happens in a person when he stops looking at the world for a moment.

The musical layer of the performance consists of works by, among others, Sevdaliza, Poluzjanty, Karolina Czarnecka, Krzysztof Zalewski, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Florence + The Machine.
