About the event

Despite the fifth year of a full-scale war, theaters in Ukraine have not suspended their activities. Both the state and independent stages, prepare new premieres, and the audiences fill up to the last place. New initiatives are also being created, such as the Veterans' Theater, which includes former soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the stage work.

What challenges — artistic and social — do theatre people face in the context of Russian aggression? How does Ukrainian theatre respond to the experiences of trauma, grief, threat and environmental catastrophe caused by conflict? Where is the space for independent, provocative art in times of patriotic commitment? Does the theatre of war have the right to speak of peace when survival is at stake?

The debate will be attended by: Ewa Bal, PhD — professor of the Jagiellonian University, researcher of Ukrainian theatre and performance, co-author of the monograph Feminist Imagining in Polish and Ukrainian Theatres (PL); Roman Grygoriv — composer and co-author of the performances OPERA APERTA (UA); Maria Yasinska — theatre researcher, documentalist, theatre producer and film and translator (UA); Illia Razumeiko — composer, author of operas, co-creator of the laboratory of contemporary opera OPERA APERTA (UA); Marichka Styrbulova — singer, performance artist, member of the OPERA ensemble OPEN (UA).

Conducted by: Roman Pawłowski-Felberg — playwright and publicist (PL)
