Tetsuo: The Iron Man

'Tetsuo: The Iron Man' (1989) is Japanese cyberpunk horror in its most extreme form — a black-and-white fever dream of screaming metal, industrial noise and disintegrating bodies. When, after a hit-and-run, an ordinary clerk begins to morph into a grotesque fusion of man and machine, the film evolves into an increasingly chaotic nightmare in which flesh turns to steel, technology turns to disease, and the protagonist's identity slowly weathers.

Shinya Tsukamoto's cult classic was created on a microscopic budget but exploded like a hand grenade in international film culture. With its punky energy, its stop-motion transformations and its unforgiving pace, the film became one of the defining works of Japanese cyberpunk and a crucial inspiration for everything from Darren Aronofsky to modern body horror.

Where David Cronenberg explores the change of the body with cool surgical precision, Tsukamoto attacks the audience as electric shocks; less as a narrative than as a physical experience.
