State influence on art and culture was far-reaching under National Socialism. Applied arts, crafts and design were instrumentalized to disseminate ideological content, and attempts were made to regulate design and material through laws and guidelines. Tapestries from factories and handweaving mills were particularly promoted as testimonies of traditional crafts and carriers of pictorial themes and motifs that could convey ideological content.
Based on the exhibition “Forms of Adaptation, Crafts and Design in National Socialism” at the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig (26.11.2025 to 12.4.2026), the presentation highlights works by various artists from this period, which have mostly been missing in art history and biographies so far.
