Prefilm: Surprise!
H. P. Lovecraft is the author of the short story The Call of Cthulhu. Born in 1890, he began writing horror stories in the 1920s. Lovecraft remained unknown throughout his life; it was only after his death in 1937 that people became interested in him. In 1984, the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society was founded. She shot the movie The Call of Cthulhu in 2005 based on Lovecraft's most famous short story. In order to remain authentic in the author's atmosphere, they opted for a silent film in the original 1920s format.
Anthropologist Thurston finds documents about a strange cult, the Cthulhu cult, in his great-uncle's estate. It is said that Cthulhu ruled the earth eons ago and has been sleeping like death ever since while the cult's followers await his resurrection. On February 28, 1925, a severe earthquake lifted the city of R'lyeh, sunken in the Pacific Ocean, to the surface. A captain named Johansen had entered the city, where the laws of physics were suspended, and unintentionally resurrected Cthulhu. Soon after, in a severe storm, the city sank back into the Pacific and Cthulhu fell back to sleep. But all over the world, the followers of the cult have come together and are marauding across the country.
