In rural Ireland, amateur historian Catherine Corless begins researching a former institution for unmarried mothers and their children, uncovering a shocking hidden history of loss.
Based on the true story, and featuring a powerful performance from Monica Dolan, The Lost Children of Tuam is a deeply moving portrait of one woman’s fight for justice.
The Garden Cinema View:
The Lost Children of Tuam works simultaneously as an intriguing mystery and an engrossing character study.
Thematically and tonally overlapping with Stephen Frears’ Philomena, the film does a very good job at addressing the overwhelming shame and excruciating pain that the uncovered deaths of ‘illegitimate’ children still evokes in Irish society.
But this wouldn’t be half as strong without the incredible performance by Monica Dolan who fully fleshes out the contradictions of a woman at once traumatised, unassuming, and quietly relentless.
A thoroughly gripping, and moving, watch.
