British cellist and composer Naomi Gee Wright is a visionary genre-defying artist whose music bridges the worlds of world, jazz, and classical music. Since her studies at at the Royal Academy of Music, London and the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York she has developed a unique musical voice that transcends traditional expectations for her instrument. Her career as a soloist and collaborator has seen her work, perform and record with a diverse range of luminaries, from the pop, jazz, world and classical arenas world wide and has her own music broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM, One Jazz, Jazz London Radio, WBTV-LP, Vermont USA, Neon Jazz, (Kansas City USA) to name but a few.
Building on the success of her debut CD, Anima Rising, Wright founded the Naomi Gee Wright Band, a trio that features supreme jazz vocalist Brigitte Beraha and trail blazing tabla player Ben Hazleton. The ensemble together with Naomi’s compositions, creates sparkling, meditative, and dynamic original music that balances intricate composition with spontaneous improvisation. Their sound is deeply informed by Wright’s extensive travels to India, Japan, and Texas, blending cinematic soundscapes with a fiery, Indian-influenced temperament.
The band’s latest album, Meteor Trail (2024), is Wright's first entirely self-penned work. It features homages to a wide array of artistic inspirations, including Joni Mitchell, Ry Cooder, Egberto Gismonti and painter Frida Kahlo.
Critically acclaimed as "stunning" and "a thing of beauty," the music showcases Wright’s versatile cello playing, which often echoes the haunting qualities of a sitar or an oud. Whether performing at major international venues or leading creative community workshops through her collective, Wright remains dedicated to the power of sound to express human emotion beyond words.
