The Watermelon Woman

Cheryl, an aspiring independent filmmaker, falls for the story of a mysterious nameless black actor, credited only as 'The Watermelon Woman'. It leads Cheryl on a journey that teaches her about herself, her history and the importance of black lesbian visibility. And along the way, she herself meets the love in her relationship with the beautiful Diana. 'The Watermelon Woman' is Cheryl Dunye's first feature film and it was awarded a 'Teddy Award' at the Berlinale in 1996. According to the director, much of the film is autobiographical.
