The Sundance-winning American witch drama 'The Witch' is set in 17th century New England, a harsh wilderness where children don't live long and faith in God is the most important thing in life. A Puritan peasant family is excommunicated from the colony due to discrepancies in the interpretation of the New Testament and therefore seeks exile on the edge of a popularly cursed forest, far from the reassurance of civilization.
Suddenly one day, newborn Sam disappears right in front of the nose of teenage daughter Thomasin. The work of a wolf speculates the mother Katherine. Or is it perhaps one of the witches who, according to rumors, lives deep in the darkness of the forest, who has taken Sam? Paranoia gradually intensifies in the desperate family as their son Caleb disappears without a trace in the woods, and the family's twin pair begin to accuse their sister Thomasin of being the witch behind it. It all culminates in a bloody finale in which the devil himself makes his flamboyant entrance.
With its lingering pace, rigorous style, devil-themed and gripping portrait of a family in disintegration, the film evokes memories of films such as 'The Exorcist', 'Antichrist' and not least Bergman's chamber play films about God's Silence such as' Silence 'and 'Like a Mirror' — but with the addition of an almost physical awkwardness and a bit of well-orchestrated genre gore.
