Thelma (Geena Davis) is a housewife, the wife of a carpet salesman. Her life boils down to taking care of the house and cooking meals for her husband, who treats her like a big, opinionated, child. Louise (Susan Sarandon), a mature woman, is a waitress, bored and frustrated with the daily repetition of the same activities. She has been living with musician Jimmy (Michael Madsen) for years, who cannot decide to marry. One day, both friends decide to break away from everyday life and go to a rented cottage in the mountains for the weekend. Due to an unfortunate event, their journey takes on a whole new dimension.
