What is the meaning of life? A simple question that has the effect of moving closer into the life of one as the years go by. In Virginia Woolf's poetic and deeply sensuous universe, the big question becomes intertwined with the small moments of everyday life -- a glance, a thought, a silence at the dinner table.
In TO THE LIGHTHOUSE, we -- and guests -- step into the Ramsay family's seaside cottage, where longings, disappointments and unspoken emotions ripple between people like the tide outside.
Based on Virginia Woolf's 1927 modernist novel, the performance unfolds a dreamy and intense portrait of love, time and human frailty. With Woolf's characteristic stream of consciousness, the performance moves through thoughts, memories and displacements between people -- and explores how an entire life can mirror itself in the tiniest moments.
TIL LIGHTHOUSE revolves around the major existential themes: the relationship between art and reality, the longing for closeness, the fear of loneliness and man's struggle against the irreversible passage of time. It is a story about family, gender politics, loss and transience — and the desire to create meaning and connection in a world where everything is constantly changing.
Alone on the stage is Christine Albeck Børge, who leads the audience into Woolf's surging streams of consciousness and gives voice to the novel's many longings, fractures and barely quiet realizations.
