Fryderyk Chopin's work, deeply rooted in the Polish musical tradition, became a source of inspiration for many later artists who took up his music giving it new contexts and meanings. A special example of such a reception is the mazurkas developed by Pauline Viardot for voice and piano, collected in the cycle of 12 Mazurkas by Fryderyk Chopin. Chopin's original melodies were combined with texts in French and German versions. The juxtaposition of Viardot's song compositions with Chopin's piano works shows the different possibilities of reading his music. At the centre, however, Chopin's individual language remains, whose recognisability and power of expression allow his music to function outside its original genre context.
