When did the Eichmedien become Nakomiads? Groß Stürlack Sterlawkami? Rastenburg Ketrzyń?
In the lands of ancient East Prussia, history was recorded not only in textbooks, but also in the names of settlements, family stories and human memory. Every name change meant a change in the world.
The play by Damian Josef Neci, based on the bestselling novel “Toń” by Ishbel Szatrawska, is a story about the inhabitants of a land where different cultures, languages and destinies have intermingled for centuries.
It is a story seen from the perspective of people whose experiences are often lost in the shadow of great national narratives. How do you maintain your own identity when borders, language and place names change? What is left of a world that has ceased to exist?
“Toń” is a moving play about memory, loss and the search for belonging. About places bearing traces of many cultures and about people trying to save their own history from oblivion.
Performance with subtitles in German, translated by Andreas Volk.
