Maren Ade's latest film (“Everyone Else”) is a humorous story of the strained relationship between a 30-year-old deadly serious manager and her constantly goofy father.
The comedy “Toni Erdmann”, shown in the competition of the last Cannes festival, became the highlight of the event. In the International Critics' Ranking conducted by Screen magazine, it received the highest ratings of any film reviewed in the last decade. The film also proved to be the undisputed winner of the European Film Awards gala. Nominated in 5 categories, it won all the most important awards: for Best Film, Best Director, for Best Screenplay and for the main roles: Sandra Hüller (Best Actress) and Peter Simonischek (Best Actor). Maren Ade became the first woman in the 29-year history of the European Oscars to win a major Academy Award. “Toni Erdmann” was also nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globes, and the BAFTA and Caesars Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
Winfred is a divorced, retired piano teacher who loves to fool around and constantly pranks his neighbors from the average German suburb. His daughter Ines — a consultant working abroad for a big corporation — likes to have everything under control just as much as her father likes to mess around. Over the years, their relationship has not worked out very well, so when a father unexpectedly arrives for a few days to visit his daughter, his visit takes a surprising turn. To restore the stressed-out Ines joy of life and sense of humor, Winfred creates a fictional character — the incorrigible businessman Tony Erdmann.
“Toni Erdmann” is a perverse, touching comedy about what is really important in life. This is the story of a woman who sacrificed everything for work, but will have to rethink the values she espouses. Maybe it is the crazy Toni Erdmann who will help her discover something that the addicted workaholic has not been able to see?
