Opera in three acts. The work is performed in the original, Italian language version with Polish subtitles.
Although the direct prototype for the libretto of the opera TURANDOT was a play by Carl Gozzi, one cannot fail to mention its romantic translation by Friedrich Schiller, who introduced the Chinese princess theme to Western culture with his translation. Today, however, it is thanks to the opera by Giacomo Puccini that this story has permanently entered the theater stages. Although the composer's death did not allow him to complete this opera, TURANDOT is an artistically finished work.
The story of the eponymous “bloody” Chinese princess gave Puccini the assumption to compose a monumental work, with elaborate choral scenes and roaring solo parts. Orient, with its exoticism — the great fascination of the composer — impressively appeared in music with an unusual stylization shimmering with the multiplicity of colors in the instrumentation. Puccini was able to imbue the fantasy of the libretto with deep life truth and feeling. He also used original Chinese melodies and instrumentation for his composition, giving the music an exotic color.
And although TURANDOT is not an action opera, it is in the characterization of the characters and the gradation of musical tension that Puccini achieves mastery in it.
