Marzena Luterek-Czyż is engaged in the creation and popularization of folk spiders — traditional decorations made of straw, tissue paper, peas and other simple, natural materials. Her adventure with spiders began with a fascination with old stories, traditions and decorations, which she learned about in open-air museums. She learned the art of creating them on her own, using books, archival photographs, old patterns and conversations with people who remember folk spiders. In his work, he reaches for traditional forms and patterns from different regions of Poland, while creating his own interpretations of this extraordinary art.
Folk spiders are more than an ornament for her. This is part of the ancient culture, associated with the symbolism of happiness, abundance and protection of the home. In traditional chambers, they were hung from the ceiling, often above a table or in a central place, as well as on the occasion of holidays, weddings and other important events, believing that they brought prosperity and abundance. One of the important parts of her activity is workshops on creating folk spiders. During the meetings, the participants learn the history and meaning of these decorations and, above all, learn how to make them with their own hands.
Marzena focuses on calm, attentive work and direct transmission of knowledge, because tradition is best passed from hand to hand.
Her workshops are an encounter with ancient handicraft art, full of symbolism and folk magic, but also with mindfulness and the discovery of her own creative sensibility. This is a time when, through the work of hands, you can slow down for a moment, listen to yourself and feel the extraordinary joy of creating your own “little universe” hanging from the ceiling.
