In 1942, with General Anders's Army evacuated from the USSR to Iran, nearly 40,000 Polish civilians arrived, including about 15,000 minors. The exhausted children found shelter in care centers, mainly in Isfahan (hence the name “Children of Isfahan”), and Iran became for them a rescue from starvation and death. The Persians welcomed them with open arms. They gave shelter, food, a roof over their heads. Iran for thousands became the first place where, after years of fear, they could become human again. Some Polish children were convinced that they had come across one of the fairy tales of a thousand and one nights...
