Beneath the Deep

Beneath the Deep is a different and sensuous theatrical experience that blew the audience away at its premiere in 2024. The performance is made in close collaboration between the worlds of ballet, acting and music and is a tribute to the light and dark forces of life told through three acts — birth, sexuality and death.

In the church we have a hymn book to help us through life's great events, but in Under the Deep, composer Jeanett Albeck has made her own pop bible consisting of well-known hits and newly composed songs performed live on stage by, among others, five elderly opera singers and five trombonists. Ahead of them, five travelers venture out into the world in search of a meaningful role in life. Through dance and song, they embrace life's major turning points, the disappointments, the drives, the grief and the realization that growing up also means letting the perfect world die.

Under the direction of theatre director Anja Behrens and set designer Christian Albrechtsen, choreographers Sebastian Kloborg and Oliver Marcus Starpov have set the stage for music that speaks to both the nostalgic and the dreamer. The result is neither ballet, nor a play, nor a classical concert, but a fusion that opens the limb down to the deepest emotions up wide open.
