Venue: Chamber - Author Caren Jess published her dramatic compendium Bookpink in 2019, a collection of seven miniatures about human abysses, social structures and social debates whose protagonists were birds. After the ATT studio in 2024, the Bookpink universe continues to grow — Caren Jess presents the new arrivals in the bird world, which is all too similar to ours: full of fantasies of power, fragile orders and the strange disappearance of imagination.
There is the eagle that despises its chick. A mother without a feminine form, but with a strict worldview: Strength counts, weakness damages reputation. So off to the reserve for unusual species with the little, “failed” son. New eggs, new hope, old toughness.
Then Mrs. Pétain, a lively female hummingbird who wants to be sterilized in order to determine her own life. But the procedure fails — and the medical wren actually thinks it's quite right.
And Nikki the Canary: bright yellow, trapped in an aviary that looks more like a pretty cage than a home. Her human Cord is dying, the room a kaleidoscope of glass and light. At the window, the Zilpzalp is waiting for the moment when the door opens and Nikki might sing again.
Among birds is an evening about power, care, imagination — and about what happens when you take birds too seriously. Or just serious enough.
