Kalima, who begins to enter adulthood and comes into conflict with her parents, is sent as punishment to the Kazakh countryside to look after her grandmother. At first, their days together pass quietly, but under the apparent idyll there is something disturbing. Soon, staying with grandma turns into a dark nightmare. “Ürei” combines folk horror, psychological thriller and family drama, building a sultry atmosphere of melancholy and hopelessness. Director and screenwriter Yerkezhan Baizhan developed the idea of his 2024 short film in it.
