The magnificent golden chandelier has been towering over the audience for more than 130 years. It is one of the first — and probably the most representative — lamps that lit up with electric light on Polish lands. How large and richly decorated it really is, you can see only when it is abandoned. The chandelier is three and a half meters in diameter and weighs 800 kilograms. This is a unique example of late 19th century design.
Rarely, once every 2-3 years, the employees of the Theater manually, with the help of a crank, lower the chandelier, clean it and replace the bulbs. This is an extraordinary moment, which is why we want to share it with you. On October 25, we invite you to the ceremony of cleaning the chandelier and replacing the bulbs, which this year will be graced with a concert by the Representative Wind Orchestra of the Wieliczka Salt Mine!
Event plan: We will open the doors of the Theatre for you from 11.30. Then you will be able to explore the interiors and corners of our building. Public areas can be viewed by yourself. It will be possible to embark on a more extensive route that is normally inaccessible to spectators of the performances in organized groups with a guide (it is also possible to sign up for a special guided tour aimed primarily at children).
At 13.30 the most solemn part of the event will begin. Then the chandelier will go up and drive for the next 90 minutes. During this time, the Representative Wind Orchestra of the Wieliczka Salt Mine will play for you. We have also prepared special attractions related to the Curtain of Women and the completed major renovation of the roof of the Theatre. The concert will end at 15.30, when the chandelier returns to its target, honorable place above the heads of the spectators.
What exactly will happen to us that day? See for yourself!
