Believe in the Spirit | 10/10 Movie Classics

dir. Jerry Zucker | USA | 1990

One of the most recognizable melodramas of the late 80s and 90s, which uniquely combines romantic cinema with elements of thriller and supernatural fantasy. The story of Sam and Molly's love, interrupted by a tragic death, becomes a story about the power of feelings that transcend the boundaries of life and death.

The creations of Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Oscar-winning Whoopi Goldberg gave the story credibility and lightness, and the famous scene at the potter's wheel and the music of Unchained Melody became symbols of cinematic romanticism

“Believe in the Spirit” hit the mass imagination thanks to its skillful balancing between emotion, humor and tension. The film pioneered the fashion for combining melodrama with fantasy in popular cinema and proved that genre cinema can tell deeply emotional stories without losing its affordability.

It is a classic of popular cinema — a moving, romantic and timeless story about love, memory and the need for closeness.
