Vagabundus is a performance in which 13 performers continuously dance and sing a musical repertoire consisting of both traditional and contemporary Mozambican songs based on gospel and baroque motifs.
Mozambican choreographer Idio Chichava examines migration through the prism of the body. Migration can be voluntary or forced, but it is first and foremost an invisible human movement -- a stream of bodies on its way. The migrant is the nomad, settler, explorer and wanderer of our time.
The choreography is inspired by the dance and singing rituals of the Makonde people of Mozambique, where movement and voice merge into the expression of a common, global body. According to Chichava, only the body, which both dances and sings, can fully unfold and exist in unison with others. He regards this global body as a forgotten, natural human condition.
The explosive power of the dancing and the voices need neither scenography, lavish costumes nor sophisticated lighting effects to touch the audience.
