On February 12, 1933, two weeks after the National Socialists took power, a series of photographs featuring white models wearing jewelry from the ethnological collections was published in Berliner Illustrierten. The famous Berlin photographer Yva (Else Ernestine Neuländer-Simon) staged the style of the New Woman from the Weimar Republic together with objects from colonial contexts and thus created something new. Art historian Marta Oliveira Sonius and historian Tom Werner show the objects together with the historical photos by the avant-garde photographer, discuss current perspectives on the works and locate them in the history of interdependence between colonialism and the Holocaust in the ethnological collections.
