Is there censorship in Denmark today? What topics are being systematically removed from American schools and libraries these years? And how did Canadian author Margaret Atwood react when her novel The Handmaid's Tale was removed from American libraries?
These are some of the issues that are being illuminated in this talk about free speech, book bans and censorship. The lecture takes the audience on a journey through a range of countries and periods; from the Catholic Church in the 17th century over censorship during the German occupation to today's Ukraine, where today there are limits on what books can be published.
The presenter is Anette Thede, retired librarian and resident at Christianshavn. Since 2012 she has been working on the subject of banned books and is a member of Danish PEN, which is behind the campaign #ForbudteBøger. The campaign will be held at libraries, schools and in bookstores across the country on 5—11 October 2026.
