DR Symphony Orchestra
One of France's greatest soloists meets one of the country's finest composers. In 2023, Gautier Capuçon premiered a new cello concerto written for him by Thierry Escaich. Musically, the concert Morgengryets songs are about lyrics—melodic themes that never end, but are simply transformed. It is a work in light and shadow, moving from peaceful spells to a ritual dance.
Around Escaich's concerto, Lorenzo Viotti conducts two musical quirks -- one going well, the other very wrong. Richard Strauss considered himself a humorist and demonstrated it with his cartoonish portrayal of the fearless villain of German folklore, Till Eulenspiegel, saying that he “just wanted to give the audience a good laugh — for once”.
Ravel's La Valse from 1920 starts as an affectionate joke with the iconic Viennese Waltz. But in an era marked by war and industrialization, Ravel's waltz plunges out of control -- and moves toward its own destruction in an immersive musical drama.
